Sargent, John Singer, 1856-1925 · [ca. 1903–1916]
This heraldic scene, the left-hand lunette on the gallery's west wall, depicts the fate of those good souls who had approached the gates of Heaven in the Judgment lunette at the wall's center. The white-robed figures ascend into the sky, holding hands and entwined with others, some playing golden harps. The hair of many figures is rendered in Lincrusta-Walton, a gilded, corrugated material that illuminates the painted forms.
