Sargent, John Singer, 1856-1925 · [ca. 1916–1919]
In this Pietà image, Sargent depicts Madonna seated with Christ at her feet, the wounds from the crucifixion nails clearly visible on his exposed foot and hands. Sargent designed the ornamental frame for this work prior to the canvas' installation in 1919. Situated on the southern end of the gallery's east wall, where other images from Christianity feature, Church was completed as a counterpart to Synagogue, installed on this wall closer to the north end.
