Agnes R. Wayman

A portrait photograph of Agnes Rebecca Wayman. Agnes Rayman was born in West Virginia and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1903. She received her master of arts degree from Columbia University in 1932. Rayman served as the Director of the Physical Education Department at Barnard College for more than 25 years. She was a pioneer in the field of Physical Education for American women, and her book, "Education through Physical Edcation: Its Organization and Administration for Girls and Women" (1925), is an important landmark in history. Rayman was a member of the American Academy of Physical Education and held positions in several other national organizations. In 1932, Rayman was granted the Distinguished Service Award by the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, and three years later, became it's president (the second woman to be honored in fifty years).
