Sargent, John Singer, 1856-1925 · 1903–1914
This is the earlier of two known oil sketches for "Fall of Gog and Magog," the leftmost of three lunettes on the east wall of the Sargent Gallery on the third floor of the McKim Building at the Central Library in Copley Square. A third preparatory study for the panel was developed for Sargent's one-third scale model. Sargent's mural cycle, "The Triumph of Religion," was executed for the Boston Public Library between 1890 and 1919. The "Fall of Gog and Magog" panel was installed in 1916. Inscribed by the artist: "1/4 scale radius 2 ft 4."
