Students in a class offered through Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción's Areyto program sit with conga drums while they focus their attention on the instructor who seems to be demonstrating the proper position of the hands. The Areyto Cultural Awareness Program was based on the philosophy that the arts can empower people by teaching them about their cultural heritage, building community, and providing youth with the opportunity to express themselves through performing and creating. In the 1990s, Areyto introduced Puerto Rican and Latino American culture to 25-30 Boston public schools through its In-School Cultural Awareness Program and the Young Audiences of Massachusetts Program.
