John M. Maki, Chair of the original Program of Asian Studies, displaying a Hawaiian dinner plate. Written on back is the note: "Prof. Emeritus John Maki holding 1 of 2 identical plates to be sent to restoration of Iolani Palace, Spring 1982. Plates from a collection of Trustee Frank A. Hosmer." Dr. Maki joined UMass in 1966, where he was instrumental in establishing the sister state relationship between Massachusetts and Hokkaido. Professor Maki also served in several administrative posts, including vice dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He retired from the faculty in 1980 before passing away in 2006.
