Two boys and a girl sit around their instructor as they learn to play the conga drum in a class offered through Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción's Areyto program. The Areyto Cultural Awareness Program was based on the philosophy that the arts can empower people by teaching them about their cultural heritage, building community, and providing youth with the opportunity to express themselves through performing and creating. In the 1990s, Areyto introduced Puerto Rican and Latino American culture to 25-30 Boston public schools through its In-School Cultural Awareness Program and the Young Audiences of Massachusetts Program.
