Dr. John M. Maki, Chair of the original Asian Studies Program, receives the Third Class Order of the Sacred Treasure from Masukane Mukai, deputy Consul-General of Japan, in recognition of Dr. Maki's efforts to promote relations between the United States and Japan. Dr. Maki joined UMass in 1966, where he was also instrumental in establishing the sister state relationship between Massachusetts and Hokkaido. Professor Maki also served in several administrative posts, including vice dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He retired from the faculty in 1980 before passing away in 2006.
