Henry Whittemore was President from 1898-1917. He was a Civil War Veteran and a graduate of Dartmouth. Henry Whittemore taught in the public schools and was the superintendent of schools in Waltham prior to being named principal of the Normal School. Under his time as principal Wells Hall and Peirce Hall were constructed, the Household Arts program was extended to three years, and increased emphasis was placed on sports and physical fitness. The University Library was built in 1969 in honor of Henry Whittemore.
