Du Bois, W. E. B. (William Edward Burghardt), 1868-1963 · November 16, 1952
Speech delivered to the Council of the Arts, Sciences and Professions in New York on the topic of the production and distribution of books within a capitalist economic system. Du Bois denounces corporate control of the publishing industry, bookstores, and book advertising and reviewing. He suggests as a remedy a movement initiated by writers to cooperatively publish and promote literature in inexpensive editions outside of the mainstream publishing industry.
