Selma Gordon

Selma Gordon was born in 1918 in New Jersey and lived in New York. Her mother was from an orthodox family and was quite religious; her father was a free-thinker and was not interested in the religious traditions. He had a desire for her to learn not only to speak but to read and write Yiddish, so he sent her to a Yiddish shule. She had a rich cultural life - music, theater, film, art - both Yiddish and secular. Also had quite a religious upbringing. She loves Yiddish and Yiddishkayt. The interview covered her early years, her marriage and family life, and her current Yiddish activities, her Yiddish and religious schooling and experience in Hashomer Aatzair.
