In an introductory essay to the exhibition catalogue for the Art Institute of Chicago in 1946, the artist's closest friend, Eugene Speicher, wrote the following: He painted my portrait and made some lithographs of me, and I painted him. The oil portraits were destroyed; we talked too much! (Mason)
