A satire. (Bellows) / Although Bellows was frequently called upon to serve on juries for exhibitions by such prestigious groups as the National Academy and the Panama-Pacific Exposition, he questioned the validity of the jury system. In response to a letter to the Boston "Globe" that praised the jury method of selection, Bellows wrote: Time is needed to estimate any work of art. Space is needed to show any work of art...Freedom is necessary for the development of all art. Freedom to create and freedom to show. (CHM, p. 185) To add to the humor of "The Jury" the back of the canvas about to be presented to the jury bears a familiar name, address, and bald head. Bellows watches and smokes, right rear.
