¡Colores!; Catalina Delgado-Trunk Interview

This is raw footage from ¡Colores! #2101 featuring papel picado (cut paper) artist Catalina Delgado-Trunk discussing her art. _02 As an immigrant, she grew up between two worlds and never felt like she belonged in either one. Through a search for her identity and sense of place, she started to discover her past. As she learned about herself, her culture, and her history, she started to express herself through her art using mythology. This began when she was working as a farmworker in Florida. _04 This is a continuation of the conversation. Catalina discusses mythology and how she uses it in her artwork. The discussion also includes the convergence of culture, myths, and moral lessons and how she blends them into her work. _05 The conversation on mythology continues. This artist also speaks about folk art, being a folk artist, and folk art as a medium. _06 Catalina speaks about bringing three types of language together in her work: language (speaking and her art), food, and culture traditions. She discusses the influences China, the Mayans, and the Middle East have had on the Mexico’s culture. She also speaks about Day of the Dead alters and separates Anglo customs from Mexico customs for this celebration. _07 At the close of this interview, Catalina speaks about symbolism and its connection to mythology. She also speaks about how she hopes the thing her audience gets most out of her art is communication.
