Nelson P. Stevens, Professor of Afro American Studies, sits on the edge of a table or desk with one of his art pieces hanging on the wall. He was an Associate Professor of Art and directed the Summer Public Arts Program from 1974-1977, utilizing the skills of University art majors to further mural painting in the New England Area. He also served as faculty advisor and consultant for The Drum magazine. Professor Stevens was a strong advocate of Black Art and a member of Afri-COBRA. By 2003 he was Professor of Art, Emeritus, at UMass.
