La Seine est une rivière qui prend sa source dans le Département de la Côte d’Or, et va se perdre dans la Manche. Elle traverse Paris : les habitans de cette Cité, se dérobant aux feux de l’été viennent chercher la fraîcheur et la pureté de ses eaux.

Many swimmers are having a bath in the Seine. his print is a satirical caricature attacking the problem of cleanliness in the river Seine. At the left someone is eating while taking a bath, in the middle people are swimming, and on the right side someone is urinating. At the same time a dog is being washed while a suntanned worker, lacking the possibility to wash at home, is using a public soap. One should remember that in Paris in the 1840's 90% of the apartments had no running water.
