The development of railroads triggered the new trend of tourism, making it possible for Europeans and - to the horror of the Parisians - people from the French provinces, to travel to Paris for sightseeing and shopping. At the same time, Parisians had the opportunity to travel to distant places in Brittany or Normandy. However, trains were still thought of as rather dangerous modes of transportation.
