The curved shape of this seat design indicates that it was created to fit a style of English chair fashionable from about 1720 to 1740. The textile design is a variation of an Indian "Tree of Life" palampore. The flowers are more naturalistically drawn than those on most Indian chintzes and depict common European varieties such as roses, carnations, and hyacinths. The exotic jungle has been transformed into a garden of familiar flowers—further proof of the Indian cotton painters’ ability to adapt their considerable talents to specific tastes.
