Isaac Bonewits, 20, who will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Magic from the Univ. of California this month, smokes a Sherlock Holmes pipe as he reads a book on magic. The diploma for "studies in the field of magic" is the first of its kind ever granted by Cal, and possibly the first anywhere. The idea of majoring in magic in a program of individual study was proposed to the university by Bonewits. UC advisers agreed to the proposal when they found Bonewits had a very strong and difficult list of courses and a B-plus average.
