Shantz Signs Two-Year Contract With A's - Little Bobby Shantz, left, southpaw pitcher named most valuable player in the American League in 1952, signs a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Athletics today as General Manager Art Ehlers watches. Terms of the contract were not made public but it was reported reliably that it was in excess of $50,000 for the two years. Ehlers did say, however, that Shantz was the "highest paid pitcher in the history of the club, including Lefty Grove."
