¡Colores!; Flamenco: A Lost Art Revived in New Mexico, Lori Silverman

#113 ¡Colores! kicks up its heels with Albuquerque's "Ritmo Flamenco," as they dance in the footsteps of the Spanish gypsies. Flamenco dancing is an art that originated with the gypsies out of India and migrated west to Spain. Dancing as they do, Ritmo Flamenco headed by Eva Encinias is working to establish a working, performing, and viewing community for Flamenco dancing. The dance itself is characterized by "cantos" or chant-like songs set to guitar. These "cantos" are often sung by a group of gypsies who use the art of Flamenco as a vehicle through which to vent their frustration. Encinias, who says her mother was actually the founder of Flamenco in Albuquerque, says it is an art that is "in your blood" and "part of your breathing pattern." ¡Colores!
