¡Colores!; The Art of Growing Older

¡Colores! focuses on the work of the older artist, how one's perception grows with age and how one's work changes. The piece features the work of several well-known New Mexico painters Frederick Hammersley and Wilson Hurley, architect George Pearl and sculptors Charles Mattox and Florence Pierce. Hammersley and Hurley both speak of a an enlightenment that comes with age and a yearning to continuously improve one's work. Mattox discusses an inevitable wisdom that comes with age; it is this side to growing older as an artist that he says enhances his perception of the world and his creative response to it. Pierce, meanwhile is a woman in love with her art. She speaks of having a dual mentality from which to derive inspiration, the side of her that has remained naïve, excited and passionate, and the side of her that has changed with life experience. Pearl talks about the different routes his work has taken over time; he is striving always for a better product. ¡Colores! Profile: A native of Cuba, Basilia Sanchez. Sanchez says her landscape and portraits have changed a great deal since her arrival in the United States. She first emigrated to New York where she married and eventually moved to Staten Island and there painted seascapes. She soon left the sharp edged grayness of the city for New Mexico, a place more like her native Cuba. Here, her almost photograph like depiction’s of the land and people of the area, take her back to the country she left long ago.
