Bronkhorst, Johannes (Dutch, 1648-1726) Three paintings of birds [Hoorn], after 1670 Three water- and bodycolor drawings on vellum. Bound in three-quarter green vellum and marbled boards; gilt; spine gilt; a.e.g. In dark green morroco and green cloth slip case. Spine height: 19 ½ inches. Drawing 1: 11 ¼ x 8 3⁄16 inches. Inscribed on verso in pencil: “Bramble finch gaeller or galler/(German inscription).” Drawing 2: 11 ¼ x 8 3⁄16 inches. Inscribed on verso in pencil: “dishwasher Bach Sterltz/wax tale/(German inscription).” Drawing 3: 14 ½ x 12 ⅛ inches. Inscribed lower left (on fence rail): "J. Bronkhorst fec:."  Stamped with monogram lower right:  “JB ?.” Inscribed on verso in pencil: “Bronchurst/288…”  Stamped with monogram on verso lower left. Originally, Bronckhorst worked as a pastry-cook. In 1670, he moved to Hoorn, which was a seaport that saw goods from both the West and East Indies, and gave up his interest in pastry-cooking. It was here that Bronckhorst began painting water- and bodycolors of insects, flowers, and birds. Bound with: Ehret, Georg Dionysius. Flowers, moths, butterflies, and shells.
