Early photographic portrait of John Dewey (1859–1952), American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer. This cabinet card photograph depicts Dewey as a young man during the early years of his academic career. The image includes the imprint of Randall of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and reflects the style of late nineteenth-century studio portrait photography. Dewey would later become one of the most influential figures in progressive education and the philosophy of pragmatism.
