In 1853 King Oscar I gave his permission to the construction of Tjärnö church. Builder was the famous church builder Johannes Torstensson from Krokstad. The church was completed in 1855. The altarpiece, dating from 1632, is made by sculptor Hans Andersson. The central altar on the altar is the crucified Christ. On the side pieces of the board one sees in ornaments winding dragons. The pulpit is also from the 1600s and made by Hans Andersson. On the pulpit are the four evangelists and four great prophets depicted. Over the pulpit hangs an angel figure from the 16th or 17th centuries. Of the two baptismal finds in the church, one is probably from the 17th century and thus the oldest inventory in the church. It is made in a clockstone in the style of the Norwegian East Peoples. In the church there are 3 votive ships, 2 of a high age.
