The central panel of this triptych is painted to look like a Gothic portal with six small scenes of the Childhood and Passion of Christ. Together with the mourning of the dead body of Christ in the middle, they form the so-called Seven Sorrows of the Virgin. The altarpiece came from the Mariënpoel Convent outside of Leiden. The triptych could be removed to safety before the monastery was destroyed in a second Iconoclastic Fury in 1572.
