A Roman lead alloy votive model axe dating AD43-200. This axe is triangular in plan with a rectangular slot extending upwards through the body of the axe. It is wedge-shaped in section. There is a semi-circular notch in centre of the blade.Similar examples are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme e.g. NMS-381D84 where it is noted that is is Kiernan's Type 2 and probably not later than c.200 AD. Other examples include: BERK-08C3D2; SUSS-571122. Excavated examples have most often been found in religious contexts and graves.Dimensions: length: 25.54mm; width: 12.56mm; thickness at the butt: 6.41mm; weight: 4.81g.
