This creature is a single individual but its body is made of separate parts. Each zooid fulfills a specialized function and is unable to live on its own or as part of another collective. A few of them aren't even physically locked within the rest and instead crawl, insect-like, all over the surface looking for (and repairing) damages in the ultra-strong armor that covers the collective. They could be mistaken for individual creatures. It's carbon-based, but the molecular structure is more resemblant of though plastics or crystalline forms than proteins. This is because of the high levels of environmental radiation. So high, any unprotected flesh-being would be cooked alive in just a few hours. Gravity is high as shit too and as a result wheel-based locomotion seems to be a prefferable alternative over stick-based appendages.  On the upside, there's so much energy available in the environment, the life-fluids from primary producers are as energy-dense as gasoline.
