Liam and his father, who had a pending asylum case and no deportation order at the time, were transported to the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas. The detention drew widespread public attention, legal challenges, and international media coverage. A federal judge later ordered Liam and his father released, condemning the circumstances of their detention, and the case became a rallying point for advocates concerned about the treatment of children and families in immigration custody. Community members organized demonstrations and solidarity actions, including the creation of origami rabbits inspired by Liam's surname, Conejo, which means "rabbit" in Spanish.
