Lehmann, born in Germany, was one of the favorite pupils of Ingres, first in Paris, and later in Rome. The sitter, formerly married to the French critic and novelist Alphonse Karr, had close ties to the German community in Paris. [see catalogue for exhibition Henri Lehmann, 1814-1882, Portraits et Décors Parisiens, Musée Carnavalet, 1983; catalogue by Marie-Madeleine Aubrun. This was confirmed with extensive research by Lynne Ambrosini, published in 2000.
