Last Sighting "On the 18th of September, 1679, they fired a salute from a swivel gun, and the Griffon sailed eastward toward the Straits of Mackinac. Taking Hennepin and the builders, La Salle set out for the south in canoes. A few hours later a furious storm broke, and the canoes were nearly swamped before they got to land. That was the last ever seen of the Griffon or her crew. She undoubtedly was caught in the storm, but was that the whole answer?" (p. 76). Allen, Durward L. "If you are in need of a mystery, here is a historic puzzle: What happened to La Salle's Griffon?" Boys' Life. Vol. 49, September 1959. https://books.google.ca/books?id=HWAg1y9FkdQC&printsec=frontcover&vq=Griffon+Michigan+History+Magazine&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false See also: https://archive.org/details/portentous-monster-hwln-05-011
