Two shahs, Zav and Garshasp, succeed Nauzar, but neither reign lasts long, and no new shah is appointed after them. Zal continues as chief paladin but is blamed for the adversity Iran has suffered. Zal agrees and suggests that Rustam, his son, join him at the head of the army. First, Rustam has to find a suitable horse. In the herds of Zabul is a bay called Rakhsh that has never been caught. Rustam lassoes him and finds his mount tor life.
