"—published in Peter Waldman's book   Connective Tissues , my essay serving as the Epilogue—I took two apparently unrelated things and created a third, new thing: I intertwined Jefferson's 1817 design of the University of Virginia's Academical Village with the 3,400-year-old ancient Greek myth of Daedalus. I brought the University of Virginia Academical Village— into the Daedalus myth. I brought the Daedalus myth— into the arena of the University of Virginia Academical Village. A reciprocal act: Architecture into myth. Myth into architecture. _______________________________________________________________________________________ To do so, I made a series of conceptual Chess Moves—starting with new vocabulary. Move 1: Knight to f3 I redefined the Labyrinth—giving it capital-letter meaning: not simply a synonym for maze, Daedalus's paradigmatic Labyrinth on the island of Crete comprised, as I saw it, three architectural Form & Story elements. Tower · Maze · Lawn An iconic trio that I revealed as present in both Virginia and Crete. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Move 2: Bishop to g5 I transposed Jefferson's iconic Lawn— as geometry and as an architectural idea— into the arena of Daedalus's Maze. I reenvisioned the center of the Maze—seeing it not as the classical constricted circle but as the Lawn imported from Virginia: a generous rectangle of grass, suitable for a showdown, the Significant Space at the heart of Daedalus's Maze. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Move 3: King castles kingside I saw Jefferson's Colonnade of Pavilions as the Maze that defined his Lawn. I associated his Rotunda library, where students seek light, with Daedalus's Tower, where he invented Wings. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Move 4: Rook to the seventh rank I overlaid both arenas, Virginia and Crete, with Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey triad: Departure · Transformation · Return _______________________________________________________________________________________ Move 5: Queen to h7—Check I united Campbell's insights with mine: His Journey Triad: Departure · Transformation · Return With my Architecture Triad: Tower · Maze · Lawn And the correspondences revealed themselves: Tower = Departure From the Ordinary World—Home—to Brave New Horizons Maze = Transformation In the Special World: Land of Mysterious Adventures Lawn = Return Home Reimagined Checkmate _______________________________________________________________________________________ I hoped readers of my essay would themselves experience the phenomenon of this three-stage iconic journey—and solve the mystery of the title's acronym—heralding the call to adventure—after completing their 18-page intellectual and emotional "LABYRINTH R.U.N."
