"BLM Photo #12454 -- Edward Tiffin, First Commissioner of the General Land Office. Appointed in 1812, he developed a workable system of public land management for this new federal agency under the Treasury Department. It occupied 3 rooms of a two-story building in Washington, D.C. A native of Ohio, he traded positions with Josia Meigs who was the General Suveyor of Ohio in 1815. He later developed and perfected different surveying procedures. Made from copy neg. of print."
