Mewar's painting tradition remained vital even into the early part of this century. Hunting and palace scenes were still the most popular subject, and even though artists began to use less stylized forms with limited shading and perspective, they continued to prefer the flat planes of solid color, the profiled faces and the sprawling maplike narrative compositions of traditional Mewar painting to British naturalism.An enormous number of hunting scenes were painted during Fateh Singh's period, most of them with radically off-centered compositions depicting what to an eye familiar with Western art is an astonishing amount of empty hills and forest.
