Two glass bowls with painted decoration

On the interior of these bowls are painted scenes in red and gold leaf, possibly also with other colors now indiscernible. One depicts a building with a gabled roof and a porch supported by columns, and in the left foreground is a large Macedonian shield. On the other is a pointed monument, clearly identifiable as a betyl (a type of cult object common in the Near East), flanked by a wall and trees. Both scenes can therefore be taken to represent sanctuaries, suggesting that the glass bowls may have been made as ritual offerings.
