Excavated 1877 in a tholos tomb at Spata near Athens.Sir Arthur Evans referred to images of sphinxes like this one with a plumed crown as sacred animals and saw them as parallels for his reconstruction of the Priest-King relief, who wears a similar elaborate plumed crown adorned with lilies. The original is in the Athens National Archaeological Museum.
