Scarf or veil made of tulle-bi-telli fabric.\nTulle-bi-telli is a type of embroidery in which loosely woven cotton or linen (tulle) is embroidered with narrow metal strips, usually of silver or gold alloy. The embroidered fabric was made by women in the city of Asyut. In the 19th century, Egyptian women wore clothes made of this fabric during their weddings (Devine and Westerfield 2014: 46-49).In the late 19th century, when European and American tourism to Egypt boomed, tulle-bi-telli became a popular souvenir for travelers, especially in the form of shawls. The shimmering textile fitted in well with the oriental trend. In American belly-dance films, a popular film genre in the first half of the 20th century, dancers often wore costumes made of tulle-bi-telli. Egyptian belly dancers also began to use the fabric in their costumes at this time.
