Blue cloth with a white fringe motif (see M6-46). In the middle of the fabric a diamond-shaped motif has been tied off, consisting of small white circles (1 cm in diameter) surrounded by increasingly larger diamonds. Twice the pattern is interrupted by a plain dark blue area, a plain diamond shaped border of approximately 15 cm wide with only here and there a white circle (diameter 4 cm). Mrs. Cecilia King first tied the small white circles as for Kawyay (see M6-47), in the shape of a diamond. Then in the parts not yet bound she has tied off here and there a larger circle as for Mormor (see M6-47) with the understanding that she probably first covered the fabric to be bound off with a piece of plastic so that the circle became evenly white. She then dyed the fabric in natural indigo.\Pattern: unknown, but compare with Kawayay, Record and Dayamon (see all M6-47).\Lapas 5495-7 through 11 were in fact made specially at the request of K.K.Gerbrands. Mrs. King had to specially make an indigo dye bath for that purpose; she had to do it under quiment because that just happened not to be available. Quiment is an imported synthetic indigo, of which a small quantity is added to the dye-bath in order to make the fabric shine while beating. These five lapas have remained quite dull. The 5 lapas which Mrs. King had made especially for K.K.Gerbrands, she could easily have sold to others; several people had asked her about it when they saw that she was working on it. The end of the Ramadan was in sight and because of the associated festivities there is always a great demand for Gara. The same is true around Christmas time (Maduike, 1976, p.54).
