Large, heavy iron nail with square head, and a square -sectioned shaft. Probably made as a 'three-inch nail'. Made by drawing out wire from a bar and forging the head. The piece is complete although heavily corroded. It probably dates from the Late Medieval period onwards, although such nails can be seen as early as the Roman period, and as late as the start of the 20th century.
