A small wheel thrown base and side sherd of Blackware (height: 43mm; diameter of base: 43.6mm; thickness: 5.3mm; weight: 21.79g). Probably originally in the form of a small cup with multiple handles, this is a poor quality sherd which has been reasonably well-fired due to blistering near the base. The fabric is rather hard and reddish-grey in colour and have been glazed inside and out with the lead glaze probably drawing iron from the body. These vessels would have probably been fired inside a pancheon or harder vessel in order to withstand the high temperatures. This sherd dates from the late 16th - early 18th century.Production centres for Blackwares are well represented in the Midlands, particularly at Wednesbury and Ticknall.This find was found with records WMID-458D27, WMID-467B61, WMID-46E6C5, WMID-4748D7, WMID-47DA27, WMID-482097, WMID-495752, WMID-4A18A8, WMID-4A77C8 & WMID-5EC7C6.
