kat The animal was unwrapped during the 1824 autopsy. Only a small piece of coarse linen has been preserved. Otherwise, the cat is still visible as a dried-out body rather similar to the drawing made by Reuvens during the autopsy (Archives RMO, 23.3/2.24; reproduced in Raven 1993, fig. 50). There is only one difference: the head has been further dissected and shows just the bare skull and the two loose halves of the mandible. The skull is that of a juvenile cat with part of the deciduous dentition still present and the adult molars and canines just erupting.. The length of the skull is 7.7 cm. The left side of the skull and the nose have been damaged and parts are lost. The inside of the skull is empty. The body lies in the usual posture with legs and tail folded against the ventral side. It is still completely covered in the matted fur, uniformly brown in colour. Several loose bits of skin with the proximal end of whiskers were obviously cut from the head during dissection. There is a long crack along the right shoulder and both front paws have broken off but are still present.
