Pencil with watercolour and gum arabic drawing showing a lesion around the anus of a 4-year-old girl. At left, is the hand of her 33-year-old mother with a skin condition which might be a form of ichthyosis. This is characterized by dryness, roughness, and scaliness, due to hypertrophy of the stratum corneum epidermis. Most are genetic, but some are acquired, developing in association with other systemic disease or genetic syndrome. Mother and daughter were outpatients at the Royal Free Hospital, London, under Victor de Meric.
