Maharana Sangram Singh Riding a Prize Stallion

This beautiful drawing-painting was made between the short-lived vogue for finely finished colored drawings during the reign of Amar Singh II (r. 1698–1710) and the more fully colored works favored by his son, Sangram Singh II (r. 1710–34). It is largely by the hand of thepremier artist of the former ruler's atelier, dubbed the Stipple Master. The face of the maharana, however, seems to have been painted by the new sovereign's favorite artist, Jai Ram.
