Troubadour "The nights lengthen, the cold strengthens. A longdrawn note of onset, and the turmoil in the poultry yard proclaims that the horrid owl is abroad in the land. Sometimes we are wakened from slumber by the unearthly shriek of a viewless and disembodied spirit, and it takes some moments of severe mental discipline to assure us that it is only the cry of the harmless little screech-owl which has disturbed our rest" (p. 320).
