The sculpture of Shri Nathji shown in this image is housed in a temple at Nathdvara, north of Udaipur, in Rajasthan. The sculpture was originally from Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, but during the reign of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb (r. 1658–1707), the local priests came to fear his extreme Muslim orthodoxy and planned to move the sculpture to Udaipur, the capital of Mewar. However, the cart bearing the sculpture got stuck in the mud at Nathdvara, and the mishap was taken as a divine sign. In this painting, the blue-skinnedgod holds up his right hand, symbolically supporting Mount Govardhan as a shield for the earth from a torrent sent by Indra.
