Historical  photograph  of Don Bergland  sitting with his grandmother in his Mons Drive home  in Vancouver BC  on June 12, 1961. when Bergland was 14 years old .  Bergland was beginning to explore creative work on a tentative basis at this time. He had isolated a table in his bedroom for work in sketching and drawing.   It is worth noting that this photograph documents two items of significant importance in Bergland’s future development. On the wall hangs an abstract painting created by his father, H.T Bergland, who at this time was taking courses at the Vancouver School of Art and building a body of studio work. Also in the photograph is pictured a guitar case leaning behind the aquarium. A few years earlier, Bergland’s father had purchased an SS Steward archtop guitar and played it regularly. These two events, a working painting studio and regular guitar playing highly influenced Bergland. Both activities became major life enterprises for him through the following years.
