Airmail field at Iowa City, Iowa, which was part of the Post Office Department's first regularly scheduled airmail service, was one of the stops along the service's transcontinental flyway. The flyway connected New York City, New York to San Francisco, California through Cleveland, Ohio, Chicago, Illinois, Iowa City and Des Moines, Iowa, Omaha and North Platte, Nebraska, Cheyenne, Rawlins and Rock Springs, Wyoming, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Elko and Reno, Nevada. The facility was constructed in 1918 and remains the oldest civil airport west of the Mississippi River that is still standing.
