Canceling machine

1956-1984

Pitney-Bowes Universal Model D, Number 5083 canceling machine was part of the postal facility set up at 90 degrees South latitude (the actual South Pole) in 1956. Known as the Amundsen/Scott South Pole Station, the facility was operated by the military from 1956 to 1976. The operation was then taken over by civilians. The machine was sent to the United States in 1984. The South Pole postal facility was operated, according to the National Science Foundation, as a temporary station under the jurisdiction of the New York City Post Office.
