Receipt for postage paid

November 5, 1813

The brief document begins, “Rec[eive]d Nov[embe]r 5th 1813 of Leopold Notnagl," and is signed in the lower right corner "Jos Clunn" by Joseph Clunn (1743-1816), who had served as postmaster of Bristol, Bucks County, PA, from January 29, 1790 to June 30, 1802. The receipt is for $19.25 paid "in full for Letters and News Papers to July 15, 1813." This record shows the settlement of the postal account for the estate of merchant Leopold Nottnagel (1754-1812). There is no record in the museum's collection for postage debts Nottnagel may have had with Clunn's predecessor John G. Priestley, who was postmaster in 1813. The reverse side has calculations that do not seem to relate to the $19.25 total, but noted on the opposite end of the paper is: "for Clunn Receipts / for Postage & Letters. / to July 15, 1813."
